  AEC DEMONSTRATORS
A.E.C. assigned a significant number of vehicles to sales demonstration duties over the years. Prior to the abolition of Middlesex County Council in the local government reforms of 1965, A.E.C. registered many buses and lorries in its own right at the County's vehicle registration office at West Ealing. If you have a photo of an A.E.C. that has the letter "M" in the number plate, there's a good chance that it's a demonstrator or other vehicle actually registered by AEC itself.
Of course there will be many exceptions to that last statement! The NML-E/SMK-F London Transport RMLs and SMM-F/AML-H Merlins & Swifts for example! And any Middlesex-based independent psv operator purchasing new A.E.C.s would have had them registered in the county.
The details below have been drawn from PSV Circle chassis lists, from many AEC-related books and brochures, and from various photographs in my collection. The list is far from complete! The large number of early Regent-type demonstrators was probably matched by a similar number of Regals, but I don't have any early Regal data, and there is virtually no information about commercials.
The chassis number of Regal IV prototype UMP227 is mis-quoted in several publications, including those by Alan Townsin, as U135974. The PSV Circle has it correctly as U134974, which is consistent with other chassis numbers of the period such as one-off Regent IV U134975 and left-hand drive Regal IV prototype U134976.
The Middlesex C.C. marks were H, HX, MC, MD, ME, MF, MG, MH, MK, ML, MM, MP, MT, MU, MV, MX AND MY.
Some vehicles listed don't have Middlesex marks. The last item on the list, the Mandator, has a Preston registration. (Guess why!)
Despite the shortcomings I hope the list and photos will be of interest. If anyone is able to flesh out the story with registration details or pictures please don't hesitate to get in touch.
